Welcome to Progressive Pockets! I go by GG, that’s short for Genet Gimja. This is a show about reclaiming the power of our money. Billionaires aren’t the only ones who get to flex their wallets and change things around here, we have our wallets too, and we have power too. So this show is about reclaiming some of that power. Week after week, you can come back here and get practical suggestions and concise, clear episodes about all sorts of things like choosing banks, thinking about where to shop, how to donate our money, cleaning up our investments.
Today I want to recap the most popular episodes of 2024. So grab some popcorn and a beverage and let’s go through them really quickly. So not too much popcorn. But do grab a beverage.
The most popular episode in terms of downloads would be the inaugural episode of the show from over 3 years ago. The show had a different name, different music, a different format back then, but this episode was about some of the foundational beliefs that were guiding the thinking behind the launch of this work. It is still the most popular episode years later. And can still be helpful to frame the discussions on this show.
One of the most popular episodes was Episode 147 The surprising truth about what ESG actually means. Wow, this episode really seemed to strike the right note with a lot of you. It’s the one that I have gotten the most emails about, strangers that I meet who tell me they listen to the show love to talk to me about that episode. And I really enjoyed researching and working on that episode. I started this show a few years ago as I was beginning a journey of trying to better align my money and my values and this show has always been an opportunity to share what I’ve learned. And I remember reading and listening to interviews with the early advocates for ESG and talking to people in the industry and double and triple checking the conclusions I was coming to, that maybe ESG isn’t quite what people are hyping it up to be. And when I put out that episode I didn’t realize how many other people would also be as fascinated by this topic. But yeah, if you haven’t heard it yet, Episode 147 was very popular this year.
Moving down the list, Episode 107 was also very popular this year. It’s about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Radical Money Beliefs and I put out that episode during Black History Month but this really was popular all year long.
Another very popular episode this year was Episode 144 How to help your clients invest for more than financial returns: how to consider societal values too. And just like it sounds, this episode was for people who might be financial coaches or other types of advisors who are starting to see an uptick in questions about socially responsible investing or green investing. I was also surprised by how popular that episode was, maybe there are more financial professionals listening to the show than I realized. So maybe it is a good time for my regular disclaimer, y’all I am not a financial professional, I’m not a certified anything. I’m not a financial planner, I’m not an attorney, I’m not providing any type of formal advice. Go to the professionals for that. This show is edutainment at best.
Interestingly, the other side of the coin, Episode 124 What to ask a financial planner if you want them to consider your societal values was also popular this year.
The next most popular episode of the year was Episode 148 Is your bank funding politicians you don’t support? Consider these 4 banks instead…….
The book review episodes always do well, and this year there were episodes on The Social Justice Investor by Andrea Longton, Decolonizing Wealth by Edgar Villanueva, Activate Your Money by Janine Firpo,
And then there were a couple of episodes where I did a peek over my shoulder type of approach, here’s how I do it. Episode 122 How I switched to a socially responsible index fund. I don’t often talk a bunch about myself on this show, but I was happy to share the mistakes I made and the eventual outcome of my journey in switching some of my investments. And a similar episode 127 How I screen charities before I donate. That’s another really popular one and I really hope it helped to ease some of your anxieties if you’ve been worried about figuring out how to decide where to donate.
I think I’ll stop there, those are the most popular episodes from this year. I’ll link all of these episodes in the description for this episode. I don’t think most people listen to this show on Spotify, but I’ll create a playlist there of this year’s most popular episodes so you can at least see a list and then if you want to listen on your own preferred app, you can do that.
I am starting to plan out some topics to cover in 2025, so if you have a request, send me an email anytime, progressive pockets at gmail dot com. I love creating episodes based on your requests.
I think what I might go and do now is to listen to Episode 103 which recapped the most popular episode of 2023. I may go and listen to that now and even Episode 62 recapping the most popular episodes of 2022, I may listen to listen to both of those to see if there were any trends or changes in terms of what has been popular from one year to the next.
Oooh I’m getting excited about 2025. What do y’all want to talk about next year? Let me know!
I am going to send the links to the most popular episodes of 2024 to the Progressive Pockets newsletter so please do subscribe to that.
